BBC4: Billy Bragg: Lyrical Journeys: 'A13, Trunk Road to the Sea'
For the BBC4 Radio programme Lyrical Journeys, he drives along A13 with presenter Jonathan Maitland, discussing the significance of this road, starting in East London, meeting Thurrock historian Jonathan Catton in Stanford-Le-Hope, and historian Judith Williams at Hadleigh Castle who adds few ghost stories. They complete the journey on the Shoeburry beach where Billy Bragg performs his A13 song rewritten and localised from the legendary Route66 song.
Why is this road so important? ‘A13 is story of the Britain – from Vikings to Olympic Park… A13 is the most important road when you are 17’. The road is significant, he says, because it’s either the big city or the seaside.
The BBC show is available on BBC iplayer until Sunday 3 March.
