Until 17 Feb – CLIVE COWAN @ Level Best Art Café Gallery
An exhibition of Southend photographer and musician Clive Cowan has just opened in Colchester.
It includes twenty-five signed and framed photographs which were taken in Colchester, Wivenhoe, and Leigh-on-Sea, with exclusive shots of Atlantis Tall Ship, Waverley Paddle Steamer and a Hawker Hurricane with ground crew!
Clive has been described as a “polymath poet, photographer, guitarist and singer-songwriter” (Leigh Folk Festival) and he says that for him, ‘arts themselves correlate, for example, poetry and song lyrics have much in common and music can suggest imagery and vice versa.’
He has travelled much of the world accompanied by a professional 35mm film SLR camera and his catalogue of images has been used in numerous TV broadcasts television, film and video.
But the exhibition is an outcome of Clive’s recent move to a digital SLR camera – a pivotal moment for any photographer. ‘Using a digital camera is actually quite challenging and in some ways more complex than shooting on film, but it also opens up new horizons of photographic opportunity and especially promotes use of computer-based processing that provides for fantastic creative control,’ he says.
He feels his style can be described as ‘bold, high contrast, brightly coloured scenes’ which he achieves by using ‘analogue, in-camera and digital post processing techniques’.
Open until 17 February 2011.
