VALLEY OF THE DOLLS - 123mins, 1967, Cert 15, Directed by Mark Robson
Starring Barbara Payton, Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, Paul Burke, Tony Scotti
Anne, a bright, brash New England college graduate leaves her Peyton Place-ish   small town and heads for Broadway, where she hopes to find an exciting job and sophisticated men.   Inevitably, things don’t quite work out! During her misadventures in Manhattan and, later, Hollywood, she   shares experiences with two other young hopefuls: Jennifer, a statuesque, Monroe-ish actress who wants to be accepted as a human being but is regarded as a sex object by all the men she meets, and Neely, a talented actress accused of using devious means to reach the top.
Jacqueline Susann’s best-selling ‘exposé’ of Hollywood gets the cliché-ridden treatment it deserves as scriptwriters Helen Deutsch and Dorothy Kingsley take us on a suitably sleazy round of drink, drugs, sex, disillusion, infidelity, and clawing up to the top or sliding down to the bottom. Look out for Ms Susann in a cameo as a reporter.
