We’re very pleased to invite back to Southend the Endellion Quartet, regarded my many as one of the most distinguished of British string quartets. The evening will start with the father of the string quartet, Joseph Haydn, with one of his masterpieces, op. 54 No. 2. This will be followed by Sibelius’ rarely performed string quartet op. 56 – his only major work for string quartet of his mature period. Its central slow movement is described by the composer as a soulful quest for serenity. Brahms’ second quartet in A major, full of Hungarian folk dances and a compulsive finale, provides the perfect end to the Endellion Quartet’s Palace Theatre concert.
