“Hands on History” Great War Event for Families is coming to Thorpedene Library

Tuesday 17th February 2015 (10.00am – 12.30pm)

As part of Southend’s “Remembering the Great War” programme, families are being invited to take part in a FREE Great War History Bingo session at Thorpedene Library with local historian Judith Williams, author of “The Amazing History of Southend” (signed copies of her book will be available to buy on the day).

There will also be a chance for library visitors to meet Living History enthusiast Ian Houghton, the First World War Recruitment Sergeant for the day – but be warned, he’s in uniform and looking for more Southend volunteers to join Kitchener’s Army!

This is a fantastic (free) half-term opportunity to discover the town’s Great War stories, look at a range of original objects, try on uniforms and examine unique objects from the First World War era.

Event Speaker profiles:

Judith Williams is a popular and widely respected local history author. In her latest book ‘The Amazing History of Southend’ younger readers can discover everything they ever wanted to know about the town’s fascinating past – from the early Iron Age settlers to the building of the pier, the airport, and City Beach to Adventure Island – but without the boring bits!

Signed copies of Judith’s latest book will be on sale at the event for £9.99.

Ian Houghton Now that the last of the veterans of the Great War are sadly no longer with us, Ian is one of a band of living history enthusiasts for whom it is important to keep their memory alive in regards to the sacrifice and deprivations that our forebears went through. For more details visit his website atwww.tommy1418.com.

For details about other Southend Great War events, please pick up a free programme at any library or visitwww.southend.gov.uk/greatwar for the latest information.
