Our Museums Education Lecturer will study three key themes surrounding Southend during the war: women, air raids, and POWs & “aliens”. We will analyse the cause, nature and consequences, of these themes in detail. The role of women will be considered in relation to the perspectives and attitudes of the time, asking whether women were applauded or ridiculed for their efforts, as well as their consequences within women’s suffrage. Air raids will be analysed in reference to specific raids, the consequences on the ground, the development of the civil defence, as well as the story of the German airman after the war. Finally there will be a look at civilian detainees in Southend and prisoners of war who were held here in prison ships, the conditions they stayed in, and how foreign nationals were perceived and treated locally.
