Home  /  Blog  /  Fri 23 May - Deadline for SOUTHEND LIBRARIES Summer Volunteering

You have until this Friday to apply for Southend Libraries summer volunteering.

If you like children and books this is the perfect opportunity to have fun and gain new skills spending time with both as Southend Libraries are looking for volunteers aged 14 and up (no upper age limit) to help us run this year’s Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge. It’s also great for your CV.

A quote from one of our volunteers from last year “My experience volunteering in the library was fantastic. I met new people, developed + learnt new skills and was able to give back to my community. If you are thinking about volunteering for the Summer Read 2014, what do you have to loose? It’s an amazing opportunity which will give you experience in talking to others and many other life skills.”

Southend Libraries are looking for volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 15 hours from Saturday 19th July to Saturday 30th August in The Forum: Southend-on-Sea, Friars, Kent Elms, Leigh, Southchurch, Thorpedene and Westcliff libraries. Volunteers will help library staff sign up children to the Summer Reading Challenge and talk to children about their books, encouraging them to complete the challenge. It is known that children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The

Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge helps gets three quarters of a million children into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence. Over 3000 children took part in the challenge in Southend libraries last year by reading books and gaining rewards.

Application forms are available from local libraries or from the Southend Libraries website http://www.southend.gov.uk/summerread. THE CLOSING DATE FOR
